Can't Boot Eswin Images

Hi everyone,

Been trying for 2 days straight. I have no issues with the Ubuntu images on the Sifive repos: Releases · sifiveinc/hifive-premier-p550-ubuntu · GitHub

But whenever I try to flash either of the 2 versions available from Eswin, I get a kernel panic: GitHub - eswincomputing/hifive-premier-p550-ubuntu

I have flashed the right bootloader and OS image, as well as a combination to try and fix this, to no avail.

I get a kernel panic about 10 seconds in:

And then it dies. If I try to reboot, sometimes it gives me memory cache errors.

Any ideas?

And yes, both bootloaders were flashed as recovery just in case, as instructed by Eswin.

Reason for trying this instead of Sifive’s image: NPU driver and ultrawide monitor support.

You probably want to share the entire boot log, starting from “OpenSBI”, so people can help diagnose it further.

Apologies, I had some issues getting the board back up due to some variables going wonky. But here it is now. It throws up different errors, but it always fails at around 10sec or so:

Tried 12V power supply via barrel jack, as well as ATX power supply. Same thing.

I suggest asking this question directly on ESWIN’s forum. The link to their forum is in the FAQ “How to post questions in ESWIN’s forum about ESWIN’s Ubuntu Release” on SiFive’s HiFive Premier P550 WEB page. Even though ESWIN’s forum is in Chinese but I was able to use the translate feature in Chrome to view it. Thanks, I thought about it but there’s far less activity there as far as I can see. Hopefully someone here can give me a pointer. I know other people have run Eswin Debian and Ubuntu images, and this issue might not be related to the images but user error of some kind .

Somehow those boot logs are all messed up, and it’s very hard to read. I tried https://github.com/eswincomputing/hifive-premier-p550-ubuntu/releases/download/2025.07.30/bootloader_P550.bin and https://github.com/eswincomputing/hifive-premier-p550-ubuntu/releases/download/2025.07.30/dvb-ubuntu-24.04-preinstalled-server-riscv64.img.zst on my P550, and it boots without any problem.

The CCACHE: DataError … seems to indicate the core has become unstable. I’d suggest hacking the device-tree in that ESWIN image and remove all CPU frequencies above 1.4Ghz. For EIC7700 cores to run at freq 1.4Ghz+, the voltage needs to be increased to 0.9V according to their opp-table. By default the board supplies 0.8V to the CPU (VDD_CPU) and there’s a GPIO pin to toggle between the resistors controlling the input voltage value to the regulator, which in turn, gives either 0.8V or 0.9V as VDD_CPU. (Refer to SOM schematic POWER REGULATOR-1 page) My P550 board is sponsored by Sifive, and it’s probably an engineering sample. I can confirm that it doesn’t support this voltage switching (there’re some missing resistors on the SOM daughter board), so VDD_CPU is always 0.8V. Thus, I know for a fact that my board won’t be stable if running at 1.4Ghz+. I might be lucky and the board can boot the ESWIN image successfully, but it’ll likely crash under heavy workloads. I’d suggest first hacking the opp-table and rule out this factor.
